A Romford Recorder investigation was featured on the national TV news last night, after we uncovered new evidence in an East End murder case.
ITV aired two special reports about Tower Hamlets man Jason Moore, who is currently serving life in prison for the 2005 stabbing of Robert Darby in Gants Hill, Ilford.
We granted ITV exclusive permission to air an excerpt of our new evidence in the case, in which the prosecution’s star eyewitness is recorded admitting that he was “drunk” at the time.
Our investigation was the lead story on ITV London News at 6pm on January 18. Another report was shown on the national news at 7pm.
The reports, by award-winning broadcaster Sam Holder, will have reached millions of viewers.
They aired just days after we revealed Jason had been put in solitary confinement for his own protection because a mystery man offered £10,000 to have him stabbed in prison after a similar report by the BBC.
ITV reported how both Jason and Robert’s families are convinced of Jason’s innocence, so have teamed up to try to overturn his conviction, winning support from the Bishop of Stepney and Lord Ian Botham.
The TV station interviewed Jason's sister Kirstie and Robert's brother Tim, from Havering.
Jason was charged in 2013 after a single eyewitness picked him out as the stabber in an ID procedure.
But a series of reports by the Romford Recorder last year revealed:
-Police knew from the outset that aspects of the witness’s account did not match the known facts.
-Jason never matched the witness’s description of Robert’s assailant to police on the day. He said the assailant was the same height as Robert. Jason is half a foot taller.
-The witness previously identified somebody else as the stabber, who looked nothing like Jason.
-He only picked Jason out after having been shown Jason’s photo by police on a prior occasion. Experts told us the procedure should never have happened.
When we tracked the witness down and interviewed him, he blurted out that he had been “drunk” on the day and had told this to the police – but this was never disclosed to the defence.
He admitted to us that he was not sure he had identified the right person.
Our recorded interview with the star prosecution witness is the basis of Jason’s latest application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) – the only body with the power to grant him a fresh appeal.
Jason’s sister Kirstie said she had been inundated with supportive calls and messages since the reports aired.
“I thought it was absolutely brilliant,” she said. “Let's hope the right people were watching.”
