Londoners are being warned of potential travel chaos in the coming days as snow could fall on the region.

It comes as much of the UK is expecting to meet with more arctic weather for another week, seeing temperatures drop below -10C. 

Weather forecaster, the Met Office has now issued a yellow warning for ice and snow for London and much of the south-east of England. 

The warning is in place from Sunday morning at 9am until Monday morning at 9am. 

The new yellow warning is in place along with the level three cold weather alert covering England by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

London to be met with snow and ice this weekend

The Met Office has predicted that two to five centimetres of snow could fall quite widely and up to 10cm in places.

With chances of travel delays via roads, trains and planes, as well as power cuts and injuries from slips on ice, communities could be “cut off”.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "While confidence is very low at this stage, there is a chance that a band of sleet and snow could push into east and southeast England.

"This has the potential to give accumulations of 2-5cm quite widely, and perhaps up to 10cm in some places, most likely, but not exclusively, over higher ground such as the South Downs, North Downs and High Weald.

"In addition, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, mainly nearer to coasts where rain or sleet is more likely."

What to expect from yellow weather warning for snow and ice in London

  • There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage may be affected
  • A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • A small chance that untreated pavements and cycle paths become impassable
