Lord Mandelson has unveiled a statue of Clement Attlee in its new location at Queen Mary College in London’s East End.
Attlee’s association with the college stems back to 1945 when he was re-elected Labour MP for Limehouse and was at the People’s Palace theatre, now part of the campus, for the constituency count—it was the night he learned he became Prime Minister.
The statue was originally unveiled outside Limehouse Library in 1988, but it was vandalised and had to be repaired last year. Queen Mary’s offered to relocate it to their campus.
Lord Mandelson’s grandfather Herbert Morrison was Deputy Prime Minister in Attlee’s cabinet.
The unveiling was followed by a lecture given by Lord Hennessy, Attlee Professor of Contemporary History at the college.
