He is Lee Carpenter, also 26, who was charged last night with murder at Bethnal Green’s Nelson Gardens estate.

Carpenter, of no fixed address, appears today in custody at east London’s Thames Magistrates’ Court.

The first man charged with Russell’s murder, Grant Carpenter, 32, who lives on the estate, was in the same court yesterday when he was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey next Monday.

Russell died at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel on Sunday afternoon, 24 hours after being air-lifted by helicopter from Nelson Gardens with stab wounds.

He had recently registered as a kidney donor to help save his sick aunt—and died at the same hospital where he was due to undergo surgery to remove a kidney.

A post-mortem at Poplar Mortuary on Sunday gave cause of death as stab wounds.

Detectives who carried out house-to-house inquiries on the estate on Monday were appealing for anyone who was at a party in Nelson Gardens on Saturday or was in the area between Hackney Road and Old Bethnal Green Road in the afternoon to call the incident room on 020-8345 3724, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800-555111, email crimestoppers-uk.org.
